Guide to Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase is a neighborhood in northwest Washington, D.C. and it borders Chevy Chase, Maryland. In this neighborhood, residents can find some peace and community while being relatively close to the rest of the city. Offering a wide variety of entertainment options in nearby Maryland make this a wonderful option amongst homebuyers.
Encompassed by Bethesda, Silver Spring, & Tenleytown/Au Park
Chevy Chase is roughly bounded by Rock Creek Park to the east, Western Avenue—which divides Maryland and Washington, D.C.—to the west, Beach Drive to the north and the intersection between Reno Road and Nebraska Avenue make up the most southern point of the neighborhood. Tenleytown/AU Park and Forest Hills/Van Ness border the community to the south, Brightwood/Manor Park and Colonial Village/Shepherd Park to the east, and Chevy Chase, Maryland to the west. Bethesda and Silver Spring are also a short drive away.
An Original Streetcar Suburb
Near the 1880’s Representatives of Nevada began the acquisition of farmland in northwest DC and southern Montgomery County, Maryland. The purpose of this business trip was to develop a residential streetcar suburb. They founded the Chevy Chase Land in 1890 and the eventual assets became this neighborhood and Chevy Chase, Maryland. After the completion of the streetcar line, the area slowly turned from farmland into middle-class housing.
Trains & Cars
The area is served by the M4, L1, L2, L4, E2, E3, E4, and E6 Metrobus lines. Towards the southern point of the neighborhood are three Red Line stations: Friendship Heights, Van Ness, and Tenleytown-AU. Some of the main roads that lead in and out of Chevy Chase are Connecticut Avenue, Reno Road, Nebraska Avenue, Military Road and Western Avenue. Route 185 and 355 are also nearby.
The Houses Vary in Style
The majority of residential options in Chevy Chase are single-family homes. Although there are plenty of condo buildings along Connecticut Avenue, most of the houses resemble the community better as their growth reflects the incoming homeowners. For the most part the homes here are large with some fronting beautiful gardens and lawns varying in size. The styles of homes also vary with Victorians and Tudors as a couple of examples. If you’re looking for real estate near city life but want to hold onto the suburban experience, then Chevy Chase DC is a great option.
Easy Access to Nightlife
Since Chevy Chase, Maryland and other neighborhoods are so close, the access to lovely restaurants becomes easily accessible. Chads Friendship Heights is a bustling American restaurant near the Metro station. This spot offers an outdoor patio, and draws a big crowd with its wide variety of beers and cocktails. Next door is Bryan Voltaggio’s fast-casual American eatery, Lunchbox. The mastermind of Aggio and Range builds a terrific menu here as his inventive sandwiches brings in plenty of visitors. The tomato soup with pepperoni and the meatloaf with homemade pineapple ketchup are among the favorites. Some other great spots around that area are Booeymonger, Cosi, The Cheesecake Factory, Aggio, and P.F. Changs.
Moving towards the eastern edge off Connecticut Avenue is Comet Ping Pong. This pizza restaurant welcomes families and some hip crowds as customers can eat pizza and wings while playing ping-pong. If you’re up for live music, check out some live bands playing here on certain nights.
Further north on Connecticut Avenue is the wonderful Avalon Theatre. This historical structure is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and is still running since its opening in 1922. It is the oldest neighborhood theater in continuous use in DC and plays independent, commercial, foreign, and historic films as well as running special programs.
Rock Creek Park & Other Recreational Facilities
Rock Creek Park is another location within the area that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This large urban park is home to a lot of trails, events and programs all facilitated by rangers and volunteers. There are also horse trails, a golf course, a boat center, and a planetarium.
Lafayette Park is located off of Broad Branch Road next to its Elementary School. This park features a tennis court, track field, playgrounds and other activities for children. It’s also a wonderful place to take your dog. Livingston Park is also nearby while some other schools in the neighborhood include St. John’s College High School, Deal Middle School, and Murch Elementary School.
Chevy Chase in Washington, D.C. is a green oasis not too far from central DC. This pleasant neighborhood has some beautiful, affordable homes and its proximity to nearby neighborhoods and Maryland offers plenty of attractions and restaurant choices.
